Under the looming bulk of Ben Bulben, by the serene Glencar Lough, you can view the Glencar Falls, a spot haunted by the memory of William Butler Yeats.

This beautiful waterfall, and the river leading up to it, has been touristed well enough – a walkway has been built and is maintained, as well as a visitor centre. However, it is still relatively easy to find a quiet spot and contemplate the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the lough, and the waterfall.

A farm near the entrance has several sheep and chickens to keep you amused, and the lough itself has reeds and breezes to soothe your soul.

The lough is only about 12km from Sligo Town, and while some of the roads are a bit narrow, it’s a lovely drive through the trees.
