文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要介绍了 1953 年Hillary 和Tenzing攀登珠峰的艰险过程及成功登顶的事迹。

1 . An extremely cold wind rushed over the Southeast Ridge as dawn broke on May 29, 1953. Edmund Hillary blinked ice crystals from his eyelashes, his woolen gloves gripping the frozen rope.Beside him, Tenzing Norgay adjusted the primitive oxygen equipment — the rubber mask leaving frostbite rings around his mouth. At 28,000 feet, every movement required three breaths. Their canvas shoes crushed the snow as they travelled across an ice cornice (檐口) barely wider than a human foot.

The final obstacle emerged at 11:15 a.m. — a 40-foot rock face later named the Hillary Step. Hillary’s ice axe trembled as he struck the weak rock layers. “Each swing felt like lifting a huge bag of cement (水泥) ,” he would recall. Tenzing, watching from below, silently counted the metal climbing nails (12 total) securing their route. When Hillary’s crampon (鞋底钉) slipped on black ice, the Sherpa’s (向导夏尔帕人) quick reaction kept them both from sliding into the Kangshung Face.

The summit revealed itself with cruel modesty — a wind-scoured snow dome (穹顶) no larger than a suburban kitchen. Hillary’s frozen camera captured essential frames: Tenzing planting the British, Nepalese and UN flags; their four oxygen bottles (now empty) gleaming in the thin sunlight; the distinctive Swiss-made wrist altimeter reading 29,029 feet. Hillary checked his watch — 11:30 a.m. precisely.

Their climb down became a race against fading light and failing bodies. Near Camp IX, Hillary’s right shoe fell through a snow bridge. That night in their tent, they shared the last tin of food, their swollen tongues making conversation impossible. When they finally reached Base Camp, expedition leader John Hunt saw their blackened fingertips and simply whispered, “Well done.” These two weary men, standing where no human had stood before, proved that even the most powerful peaks yield to the indomitable partnership between human courage and perseverance.

1. What major challenge did Hillary face while attempting to overcome the Hillary Step?

A.Too heavy ice axe.B.Unstable rock structure.C.Limited climbing nails.D.Poor-quality footwear.

2. What message did Hillary try to convey through his photos?

A.Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of individual glory.B.Humanity leaps forward when we dare the forbidden.C.Where waterfalls thunder, human voices echo louder.D.First we shape our tools, thereafter our tools shape us.

3. How did John Hunt feel when he whispered “Well done”?

A.Relieved but concernedB.Sympathetic but disappointedC.Amused but angryD.Proud but doubtful

4. What did Hillary and Tenzing probably complete?

A.An equipment test for future climbers.B.A scientific study of high-altitude conditions.C.The first upward journey to Qomolangma’s summit.D.A dangerous rescue mission on Mount Qomolangma.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述登山家Reinhold Messner的登山成就及他与弟弟Günther登山的悲剧和后续故事。

3 . There are 14 peaks measuring more than 8,000 meters in the world. Reinhold Messner was the first person to have climbed them all. Before he passed that landmark, in 1986, he and his friend Peter Habeler became the first people to have reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma without supplementary (补给的) oxygen.

Considered alone, Reinhold’s achievements are more than enough to earn him a seat in the pantheon (名流). However, for 35 years, a cloud lay over his reputation as a person. Who could forgive a man that had abandoned his sick younger brother in order to pursue his own ambitions?

Reinhold and Günther Messner made their first Himalayan expedition in 1970. Already excellent rock climbers in Europe, they had been invited to attempt the previously unclimbed Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan — the largest, highest rock wall in the world. The expedition was difficult for more reasons than the mountaineering challenge alone. Finally, with only days left until the expedition’s permit ran out, there was a break in the weather and Reinhold took his opportunity. On June 27, he began to climb the Rupal Face alone. Seeing his brother leave the highest camp, Günther raced up the rock face to catch up with him.

The Messner brothers successfully reached the summit together an hour before sunset — a magnificent achievement. However, with no stoves, tent, or sleeping bags, they were forced to build an emergency camp high on the mountain. Four days later, Reinhold staggered (踉跄地走) into the valley below the Diamir Face of Nanga Parbat, located on the other side of the mountain, in a state of hallucination (产生幻觉) and missing seven of his toes. Günther was given up for dead and lost.

According to Reinhold, after reaching the summit, the two brothers shook hands and discussed the best way down. Night was falling, with the surrounding temperature quickly dropping to 40 below freezing. Seeing Günther suffering badly from altitude sickness (高原反应), Reinhold decided that their only chance of making it down alive was to use the other side of the mountain, the Diamir Face, a route that had never been taken before.

This remained Reinhold’s story alone, however. Arguments continued in the mountaineering community as to what may have actually happened. For more than three decades after his brother had died, Reinhold repeatedly returned to the mountain in order to look for his remains. He knew that if he was able to find Günther on the Diamir side, his story would essentially be verified.

On July 17, 2005, three Pakistani climbers were on the Diamir glacier of Nanga Parbat at 4,300 meters when they came across the remains of a human body. Nearby, a leather boot was found in which a lower limb was encased. The boot, they realized, must have belonged to a climber who had gotten lost before 1980, after which footwear would become plastic. In August 2005, Reinhold travelled to Nanga Parbat himself to inspect the body. A cord rope was looped (缠绕) over the toe of the boot, as he and his brother had worn their boots. It was Günther.

Once the skeleton had been harvested for DNA samples by a doctor, Reinhold called his family to tell them the news. With their permission, he burned the body at base camp, built a memorial, and threw Gunther’s ashes towards the mountain: another death, another rebirth.

Pushing past her limits

At 11:31 am on July 18, I reached the summit of Mount Muztagh Ata in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Standing at 7,546 meters at the age of 18, I earned the title of National Mountaineering Athlete. As I stood there, tears unexpectedly streamed down my face.

Our team consisted of 17 people, including seven coaches. We started the climb at 3 am, making our way up in freezing temperatures. With the shortage of oxygen, every step was a struggle-my head throbbed (阵痛) with pain and my stomach churned (翻腾). I felt     1     I was on the verge of fainting.     2     a lack of appetite, I forced myself to eat something. My feet were swollen, and I could hardly feel     3    .

After nearly three hours of struggle, the sun began to rise from behind the mountain, casting a warm glow on the snow. For a moment, I felt     4     (renew). I tried to take out my snow goggles, but I was too weak, and my coach had to help me. Feeling exhausted, I told my coach I wanted to slow down, but he noticed my nose was freezing and my lips were stiff. He warned me that if I didn’t keep moving, the cold     5     cause me to get sick, making it impossible to reach the summit. I immediately regained my focus and pushed myself to move     6     (fast).

I was the last team member     7     (reach) the top, and though my teammates cheered me on, I was too tired to respond. The view was beautiful, but I was so exhausted that I couldn’t even appreciate it. My mind went numb, and every step during the final stretch seemed like a battle. But finally, I reached the peak. I sat down on a rock, dizzy and crying.

Crying at that moment wasn’t just about the physical pain. It was a release of all the emotions I     8     (bottle up). It was a mix of exhaustion, awe for nature, and a sense of connection with the mountain. I was also proud of myself for making it to the top.

When I returned to the busy city, surrounded by the noise of cars and crowds, I found myself missing the quiet world of the mountains. I missed the cold, damp sleeping bags, the faint nausea from the lack of food, and the stars and moon     9     (hang) over us in the early hours. It was only in that stillness     10     I truly appreciated the beauty of the mountains.
